FAQs

Questions, answered.

Thoughtful answers to the questions we hear most, from treatments to what happens at your first appointment.

Treatment questions

You are not alone in this.

80% of men and 30% of women see thinning begin in their 30s. With the right treatment, good nutrition and healthy hair care, many people grow hair again. It starts with understanding what is actually happening.

Why am I suddenly losing my hair?

Sudden shedding usually has a trigger: stress, an illness such as Covid or RSV, or a high fever, and the inflammation that follows. A consultation works out which one applies to you.

How fast will my hair grow back?

Hair growth is a marathon, not a race. Hair grows in cycles, and a healthy cycle averages 1 to 1.5 centimeters a month, about half an inch. Consistency is what wins.

Do you take insurance? HSA?

We do not accept insurance at this time. Trichology is part of the paramedical field, and most insurance providers consider it non-essential. We do accept HSA payments, which can often be used toward your care.

Why do I need blood work?

Blood work shows what is happening inside your body: vitamin D3, ferritin and iron, thyroid, DHT levels and more. Those numbers shape your treatment plan. Dawn gives you a written request to take to your doctor, your doctor places the official order, and your insurance handles that bill.

Is this all confidential?

Yes. We abide by HIPAA. If your plan should be coordinated with your physician, for example during cancer treatment, we ask your permission first and then work with your doctor directly.

Hair truths & common myths

What actually works.

Hair loss brings up real emotions: frustration, worry, a dent in confidence. It can make events, photos and everyday moments feel heavier than they should. That is why hair health and overall well-being belong in the same conversation.

I see a lot of ads for growth serums. Do they work?

It depends on what is in them. Most will not work if you have an underlying issue such as an autoimmune disorder. Blood work helps reveal why you are losing hair in the first place.

Does rosemary oil work?

The theory is that rosemary oil brings blood flow to the follicle, but the molecule is too large to actually reach it. If you have dandruff, psoriasis or dermatitis it can make things worse, and it can disrupt the pH of the scalp. Our honest suggestion: skip it.

Am I likely to lose my hair if my parents did?

Genetics play a large part. Androgenetic alopecia, the most common and most controllable type, is driven by DHT, a hormone that blocks the follicle from the nourishment it needs. The follicle slowly goes dormant, usually over decades. Caught early, it can often be turned back three to five years.

What is alopecia areata?

There are three types:

  • Patchy alopecia areata, the most common: coin-size patches, often triggered by stress, with hair usually returning within a few months. A dermatologist can sometimes help with a cortisone injection.
  • Alopecia totalis: loss of all hair from the neck up, driven by an autoimmune response. Rare.
  • Alopecia universalis: total loss of hair on the entire body. Also rare.
